If you have seborrheic dermatitis, you've probably been told to avoid oils. That advice is mostly right — but it misses an important distinction. The problem isn't oils in general. The problem is oils that contain the specific fatty acids that Malassezia yeast feeds on. MCT oil doesn't contain them. That's the whole reason it works.
Why most oils make sebderm worse
Malassezia yeast cannot synthesize its own fatty acids — it depends entirely on external lipid sources to survive and multiply. The fatty acids it can use fall within a specific carbon chain length range: C11 to C24. Most common skincare oils land squarely within that range.
Coconut oil (high in lauric acid, C12), olive oil (oleic acid, C18), argan oil (linoleic and oleic acids), jojoba oil (wax esters in the C20–C22 range), and shea butter (stearic and oleic acids) all provide exactly what the yeast needs to overgrow. This is why so many people experience flare-ups after using products marketed as "moisturizing" or "natural" — the ingredients are feeding the underlying problem.
The question isn't whether an oil is natural. It's whether Malassezia can metabolize it.
Why MCT oil is different
MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. The "medium-chain" part is what matters here. MCT oil used in sebderm-appropriate formulations is composed primarily of caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10) — chain lengths that fall below Malassezia's metabolic range.
The yeast simply cannot process C8 and C10 fatty acids. They are too short for its enzymatic machinery. This means MCT oil provides genuine skin hydration — reducing water loss, softening texture, supporting barrier function — without providing any fuel for the yeast responsible for the flare-ups.
This isn't a theoretical benefit. It's the mechanism. MCT oil is one of the few oils that can be used on sebderm-prone skin during active flare-ups without aggravating the condition.

Hydrates without feeding the yeast
The most immediate benefit is safe moisture delivery. Seborrheic dermatitis creates a cycle where flaking and irritation compromise the skin barrier, which in turn makes the skin more reactive and vulnerable. Most moisturizers make this worse by introducing Malassezia food sources. MCT oil breaks that cycle — it restores moisture without adding fuel.
Supports skin barrier repair
A compromised barrier is both a symptom and a driver of sebderm. The barrier's lipid matrix needs replenishment to function properly, but most lipid sources also feed the yeast. MCT oil fills that gap: it's a lipid that doesn't trigger the problem it's helping to repair.
Works as a carrier for antifungal ingredients
MCT oil is one of the few safe carrier oils for sebderm-prone skin. Seborrheic dermatitis doesn't stay in one place — it affects the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, nasal folds, beard area, and other sebum-rich zones. A single Malassezia-safe carrier that works on all these areas simplifies the routine considerably. MCT oil is light enough for facial use and absorbs cleanly enough for scalp application.
How to use MCT oil for seborrheic dermatitis
For the scalp: Apply a small amount directly to the affected areas of the scalp before bed. Work it gently into the skin — don't oversaturate. Leave overnight and wash out in the morning with a sebderm-appropriate shampoo. This works well for softening scale buildup and reducing overnight flaking.
For the face: 2–3 drops warmed between fingertips, pressed into the skin after cleansing. Can be used alone or layered under a Malassezia-safe moisturizer. Avoid the eye area.
As a carrier oil: When using tea tree oil or other essential oils on sebderm-affected skin, dilute to 1–2% in MCT oil before application. This is the only carrier oil with clear evidence of being safe for Malassezia-prone skin alongside antifungal actives.
One important note on formulation: Not all MCT oil is the same. Some products labeled "MCT oil" include lauric acid (C12) as part of the blend, which partially undermines the benefit. For sebderm use, choose products that specify C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid) as the only components, or look for "fractionated coconut oil" that explicitly removes the C12 fraction.
What to pair it with
